Gigapixel Photography

The advent of digital technology has caused a revolution in the way we think of photography. Before this revolution, most of us thought of photography in terms of images captured on film that subsequently would be transformed into prints by way of photographic enlargement. However, rapid proliferation of digital cameras, scanners and printers has changed this perception. Even the prevailing jargon has changed. Where previously an image was described in terms of granularity and acutance, it now more often is defined by pixel count and dpi. Meanwhile, those of us who have spent much of our lives in the pursuit of film-based photography keep asking ourselves whether such photography can survive; and, if it does, what role will it play? When we debated this question in late 2000, it seemed reasonable to assume that digital cameras with resolutions in the 10-megapixel regime would become commonplace within a few years. This would put them in head-to-head competition with 35-mm film-based technology; perhaps even displacing that technology entirely within a decade or so. On the other hand, it seemed unlikely that digital cameras with resolutions much in excess of 10 megapixels would appear in the near term. Especially unlikely would be the emergence of digital cameras with resolutions approaching 100 megapixels. As a consequence, we felt it likely that film-based large-format photography would for the time being remain unchallenged. With this in mind, we have concentrated recent endeavors upon the application of ultra-high-resolution techniques to the field of large-format photography.
In defining the term “ultra-high-resolution,” we have analyzed each factor that bears upon the image forming process; especially taking into account the effects of atmospheric blurring, lens aberrations and film granularity. When it became apparent that the sought-for resolution could not be preserved via conventional photographic enlargement, the scope of our analysis was widened to include film scanners and digital printers. We concluded that, consistent with the largest practicable roll film format (9″x18″), we could expect to achieve a resolution equivalent to 1000 megapixels. Hence, came the name Gigapxl&trade. With recent developments, this figure approaches 4000 megapixels, but the name remains unchanged.
Subject to the limitations of human vision, a minimum of 8 square inches of print area is needed to convey the information contained in a 1-megapixel image. When scaled to 1000 megapixels, the minimum print area becomes 50 square feet. For prints made from our 9″x18″ format, this equates to a print which has a height of 5 feet and a width of 10 feet. Likewise, a 4000-megapixel print has dimensions of 10 feet by 20 feet. Meanwhile, close-up sharpness matches that of a 4″x6″ print from a 3-megapixel digital camera. The information content of a Gigapxl print can be compared to that available in a real-world scene which is viewed through a pair of binoculars. In the case of 1000-megapixel images, one would require 6X binoculars; twice this power at 4000 megapixels.
The first Gigapxl cameras were completed and ready for test in February 2001; the first color landscapes being produced a month later. Early images had a pixel count of 260 megapixels (20-micron scan resolution) and were printed on photographic paper. Within a year, however, the count had increased to 670 megapixels (12.5-micron scan resolution). At which level, although substantially higher resolution was being achieved on film, the pixel count temporarily became constrained by issues related to scanner resolution and the file size limits of Adobe Photoshop. Meanwhile, with second-generation cameras (combining superior lenses and a variety of focal lengths) nearing completion, we switched from photographic printing to pigment ink printing. Working closely with Adobe, issues related to Photoshop file size have slowly but surely been resolved. Meantime, collaboration with Leica Geosystems (manufacturer of the DSW500 digital scanner) is about to yield scans with a resolution of 6 microns. At which time, numerous existing negatives will be redigitized at 2,900 megapixels. By year end (2004), we expect to push scan resolution to the 5-4 micron range; the corresponding pixel counts being 4,180 megapixels and 6,530 megapixels, respectively.
Extensive viewer response to Gigapxl imagery was first obtained in 2003. In March of that year, a 21-foot panorama of San Francisco was exhibited at The Albuquerque Museum. Four months later, a similar image was exhibited at the Palace of Fine Arts/Exploratorium in San Francisco. Aside from general expressions of awe, feedback mainly has centered around the extent to which ultra-high-resolution adds a humanizing touch to subject material which otherwise tends to be dominated by its monumental scale. Especially it has been noted that the ability to capture the minutiae of everyday life provides a level of interest not found in conventional cityscapes.
While technical issues which relate to scanning and digital processing continue to be addressed, current efforts are focused upon the expansion of an image portfolio. At this point, we have stockpiled some 500 images; a fair proportion of which already have been scanned at the 10-micron level. Subject material for the most part typifies the American landscape. To date, photographic forays have been made to all Provinces and States, with the exception of Hawaii. Notable urban subjects include cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Calgary, Colorado Springs, Dallas, Seattle, and Denver. Work in the National and State Parks/Monuments extends to Yosemite, Point Lobos, Mount Tamalpais, Mono Lake, Monument Valley, Canyonlands, Grand Canyon, White Sands, Mesa Verde, Canyon de Chelly, the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Devil’s Tower, Mount Rushmore, the Badlands of South Dakota, Denali, Jasper, and Banff.
In terms of the future, we have been much encouraged by the diversity of applications which continue to emerge. One of particular appeal relates to the documentation of cultural and archaeological sites which cannot be preserved and which inevitably will deteriorate with the passage of time. Many thousands of these sites are present around the world. Prime examples include entire cities such as Rome, Italy. In this instance, limestone structures which have stood for thousands of years have become the victims of acid rain. Stonemason’s chisel marks, until recently clear to see, have all but vanished. Only through a massive program of ultra-high-resolution Documentary Photography can such details be preserved for enjoyment and study by future generations.

Camera

A Camera is a device that records and shops pictures. Those pictures could be nonetheless photographs or moving pictures such as videos or films. Cameras might perform with the light of the visible spectrum or with other portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. A Camera typically consists of an enclosed hollow with an opening (aperture) at one finish for light to enter, and a recording or viewing surface for capturing the light at the other finish. A majority of cameras have a lens positioned in front of the Camera’s opening to collect the incoming light and concentrate all or element of the picture on the recording surface. The diameter of the aperture is usually controlled by a diaphragm mechanism, but some cameras have a fixed size aperture. Most 20th century cameras utilised photographic film as a recording surface, even though the majority of new ones now use an electronic picture sensor.
The nonetheless Camera takes one photo every single time the user presses the shutter button. A typical film Camera continuously takes 24 film frames per second as extended as the user holds down the shutter button, or till the shutter button is pressed a second time. From its inception, the Camera has been instrumental in the recording of nevertheless pictures from then present surroundings, and additional modifications led to the improvement of motion picture sequences in the late 19th century. Cameras and the exhibition of Camera captured pictures are widely employed in each specialist and customer settings in the 21st century for each mass and interpersonal communication purposes.
Classic cameras capture light onto photographic film or photographic plate. Video and digital cameras use an electronic picture sensor, typically a charge coupled device (CCD) or a CMOS sensor to capture pictures which can be transferred or stored in a memory card or other storage within the Camera for later playback or processing. Cameras that capture a lot of pictures in sequence are identified as film cameras or as cin cameras in Europe, these developed for single pictures are nonetheless cameras. Even so those categories overlap as nevertheless cameras are typically utilized to capture moving pictures in special effects function and several contemporary cameras can swiftly switch among nonetheless and motion recording modes. A video Camera is a category of film Camera that captures pictures electronically.
The lens of a Camera captures the light from the topic and brings it to a concentrate on the film or detector. The style and manufacture of the lens is vital to the top quality of the photograph becoming taken. The technological revolution in Camera style in the 19th century revolutionized optical glass manufacture and lens style with excellent rewards for contemporary lens manufacture in a wide range of optical instruments from reading glasses to microscopes. Camera lenses are produced in a wide range of focal lengths. They range from extreme wide angle, wide angle, Classic, medium telephoto and telephoto. Each and every lens is greatest suited a particular sort of photography. The extreme wide angle may possibly be preferred for architecture since it has the capacity to capture a wide view of a creating. The regular lens, simply because it frequently has a wide aperture, is typically employed for street and Documentary Photography. The telephoto lens is beneficial for sports, and wildlife but it is a lot more susceptible to Camera shake.
Due to the optical properties of photographic lenses, only objects inside a restricted range of distances from the Camera will be reproduced obviously. The process of adjusting this range is identified as altering the cameras concentrate. There are a variety of approaches of focusing a Camera accurately. The simplest cameras have fixed concentrate and use a modest aperture and wide angle lens to guarantee that anything inside a particular range of distance from the lens, generally about three metres (ten ft) to infinity, is in affordable concentrate. Fixed concentrate cameras are normally cheap varieties, such as single use cameras. The Camera can also have a restricted focusing range or scale concentrate that is indicated on the Camera physique. The user will guess or calculate the distance to the topic and adjust the concentrate accordingly.
The size of the aperture and the brightness of the scene controls the quantity of light that enters the Camera for the duration of a period of time, and the shutter controls the length of time that the light hits the recording surface. Equivalent exposures can be produced with a bigger aperture and a more quickly shutter speed or a corresponding smaller aperture and with the shutter speed slowed down.

The Basic About Color Photography

While Black and White Photography has long been the photo class standard, there comes a time when every photographer wants to experiment with representing the world in the exact way that we see it in color. In order to learn color photography it requires a firm understanding of the basic elements of photography which can be broken down into the following easy to understand elements.
Contrast
In Black and White Photography, contrast refers to the difference between the lightest and darkest elements of a photograph. Summed up, you can think of it as how white is white? With Black and White Photography, there are really only three tones: low contrast, medium and high contrast but with color photography it gets a little more complicated. Color photographs have color contrast, as opposed to the tonal contrast of black and white.
Color contrast is determined by the way each of the colors interacts with the colors surrounding it. While the contrast can still be adjusted to push bright to dark ratio, the colors in a photograph appear different depending on whats around them. For instance, think of a baseball sitting in bright green grass that image has high color contrast because the bright white of the baseball will stand out against the cool green of the grass.
The Temperature of Your Colors
Whenever you take photographs in color you will have to keep an eye on their color temperature. One thing that will affect the color temperature of your picture is the different types of lights that you use. While there are a lot of technical measurements for color temperature and the way it interacts with actual temperature, we can think of it in terms of tint.
Tint and color temperature are actually referred to as “white balance” in photography. How this works is that film and sensors are made with a specific kind of light in mind and anytime a picture is taken in a different lighting situation it impacts whether or not the white looks truly white. For example, if you take a picture underneath a fluorescent light is always has a green tint to it because that’s the color temperature of those lights
Using Temperature
When shooting in color, it is important to understand which color temperature or tint is best for the image youre trying to create. Warm, reddish tints, like those at sunset, are flattering to most skin tones while bluish tints are better for neutral product pictures.
You can adjust your white balance several different ways- you can do it with your Camera, by using filters, editing the image in the darkroom or by using photo editing software. One way to make sure you get a great shot is by shooting the picture several times using different white balance settings so you can later choose the best one.
Color theory is a complex art that professional photographers work their entire lives to master. Designers often take several courses on color as part of their education, and there is no shortage of competing opinions on how color can be used best to achieve certain goals.
If you’re just starting off learning to use color, then your first goal is to accurately capture the image the way you see it. Once you’re able to start doing this with color images, you can start using different colors to add emotional impact to your photographic story. As always, you should stick to the rule of doing whatever works best for your photographs and what gives you results you enjoy.
